Mayor, Encik Lawrence Lai Yew Son, Deputy Mayor, Encik Mohd. Chee B. Kadir and 25 Councillors of Miri City Council declared their Acceptance of Office during the solemn ceremony being held at Dewan Suarah Miri on Saturday 23rd January 2010.
The Ceremony was witnessed by YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak (1) who is also the Minister of Industrial Development and Minister of Tourism and Heritage. The other dignitaries who were present in the Ceremony include, YB Dato’ Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology & Water Malaysia, YB Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister of Communication & Assistant Minister of Sports, YB Haji Ahmad Lai Bin Bujang, Member of Parliament for Sibuti, YB Aidan Wing, State Assembly Member for Lambir, YB Andy Chia Chu Fatt, State Assembly Member for Pujut, Encik Abd. Aziz B. Hj. Mohd. Yusof, Deputy Resident of Miri Division.
Concurrently, 25 Residents Committees set up by Miri City Council have been given the appointments for another 2 years. The Chairpersons of these Residents Committee are currently the Councillors of Miri City Council. The Chairpersons together with their members had received the Letter of Appointment during the same ceremony from YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak (1). The roles of the Residents Committees are to gather feedback and suggestions on services provided by the Council with a view to further improving the Council’s services to the respective zones.
Immediately after the Swearing-In Ceremony, Mayor Lawrence Lai Yew Son has conducted the first meeting of the new Full Council of which the Council has endorsed the setting up of 14 Standing committees to carry out its business for the next 2 years. The new committees being created include Environment & Green Culture Committee, Safety & Security Committee and Licensing & Enforcement Committee. The Council has also set up a Management & Delivery Unit to oversee the Council’s Key Result Areas (KRA) as well as its Key Performance Indicators (KPI).
