Councillors To Put People, Development First: Manyin
BY: SERIAN DISTRICT COUNCIL  (Thursday, February 25, 2010)

SERIAN: Councillors are the grassroots movers and shakers that the government uses to turn this town into a modern city in 10 years' time.

Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong said the councillors may be from various different political parties, but they are all under Barisan National (BN).

"Don't focus on the differences between the parties. Instead, be the BN representatives that put the people and development of Serian first so that it will be on par with developed cities," said Manyin who is Tebedu assemblyman.

He was speaking during a swearing-in ceremony for the chairman, vice-chairman and other members of Serian District Council (SDC) held at the town's community hall yesterday.

Manyin urged councillors to work together with government officers to bridge the urban and rural divide.

"The country's leadership has its direction and focus, but it will be difficult to get things done without the cooperation from council members."

A total of 26 councillors were sworn in for the 2010/ 2011 term. Out of this number, 25 served in the previous term while Tsai It Szn from the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) replaced Bong Kee Pui. SDC chairman Sinde Muling had similar sentiments.

"I ask all parties to work together as a team, regardless of political affiliation. There is still much to be done and projects that must continue into the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP)," he said.

Sinde added that the people want more and the council must double its efforts despite limited financial resources and manpower.

"We must listen to the 'people and improve the 'council's service delivery system."

Serian MP Datuk Richard Riot, Kedup assemblyman Frederick Bayor Manggie, who is Walikota Kota Samarahan and Balai Ringin assemblyman Snowdan Lawan were also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
