MIRI: The public in Limbang continue to litter due to an extremely low level of awareness of the dangers of dengue spread by aedes mosquitoes.
Limbang District Council chairman Sufian Mohat stressed that litter makes good breeding grounds for aedes mosquitoes.
"Those litterbugs are putting the lives of innocent people at risk by their bad habit,"he said.
"It is pointless for the council to clean up the place when members of the public continue to throw rubbish anyhow.
We appeal for public support in this campaign against dengue by keeping our environment clean,"he added.
Sufian said this when commenting on steps taken by the council to stop the spead of the disease.
"Dengue is rising every year and it is one of the challenges we have to face. We conduct cleanliness campaigns from time to time to educate the public on the importance of cleanliness.
The public should not depend on the govenment for conducting such campaigns. The public should take the initiative to take care of their backyards,"he said.
The council has received some 30 complaints from the public regarding littering in the past months.
Among the favourite dumping grounds is behind Bangkita building here.
"We are monitoring these dirty palces and we have instructed the contractors to clean up the rubbish in these places," said Sufian.
